Skull base chondrosarcoma presenting with hemorrhage.

چکیده
A 34-year-old white man with a six month history of a feeling of déjà vu presented with an acute onset of headache and blurred vision associated with nausea and vomiting. Neurological examination was significant for a right third cranial nerve palsy. Computerized tomography (CT) demonstrated a 2.0 cm rim calcified right paracavernous mass with intratumoral hemorrhage and an adjacent 2.6 cm by 2.0 cm right temporal lobe hematoma. Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) was present in both lateral ventricles, right more than left (Figure 1). Diagnostic cerebral angiography demonstrated no evidence of aneurysm. Brain magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a 2 cm mass in the right paracavernous region extending into the suprasellar region with heterogeneous signal intensity on T1and T2-weighted images and heterogeneous enhancement after gadolinium administration. Adjacent to the lesion was a right temporal lobe hematoma; intraventricular hemorrhage was also observed in the right lateral ventricle (Figure 2). The patient underwent a right pterional craniotomy for gross total resection of the tumour. Histopathological examination of the tumour demonstrated a low grade hyaline chondrosarcoma. The patient subsequently underwent proton beam radiotherapy and is currently 82 months out from surgery with no evidence of recurrence. Cranial chondrosarcomas are uncommon tumours which typically present with headache and visual disturbances1. The mean duration of symptoms at presentation ranges from 23 to 26 months1. These slow growing cartilaginous neoplasms generally become symptomatic secondary to local invasion and are only rarely associated with intratumoral or peritumoral hemorrhage2-9. The present case highlights a patient with a skull base chondrosarcoma who presented acutely secondary to intratumoral, intraparenchymal and intraventricular hemorrhage.

Pontine haemorrhage due to chondrosarcoma of the skull base.
A young adult presented with acute weakness of right side of body and slurring of speech. An initial brain CT scan showed a pontine haemorrhage, however MRI done a few days later revealed a mass in the left parapharyngeal space. Histopathology of the mass revealed that it was a chondrosarcoma. Subsequently the patient was initially treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy and later surgery. S...
متن کاملChondrosarcoma of cranial vault: case report and review of literature
Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant cartilage forming tumour usually arising from long bones and rarely seen in cranium. In cranium it is seen to commonly arises from skull base with skull vault being a highly unusual site. We report a case of a 30-year female presenting with complaints of headache for 6 months found to have a large chondrosarcoma in right fronto-parietal region which is an extr...
متن کاملA case of acute subdural hematoma due to bleeding from metastatic chondrosarcoma of the skull
BACKGROUND Intra or peritumoral hemorrhage of brain and skull tumors sometimes presents as stroke. Skull metastasis of chondrosarcoma is relatively rare, and furthermore, a case of intratumoural hemorrhage of skull metastasis of chondrosarcoma has not been reported. CASE DESCRIPTION A 73-year-old man underwent right lower leg amputation in the past because of chondrosarcoma and was operated f...

متن کاملSkull Base Chondrosarcoma: Is there a Role of Endoscopic Excision?
Skull base chondrosarcomas are rare and account for approximately 0.15% of all intracranial tumors. Management of these tumors is challenging because of their potential to recur, and their proximity to vital structures such as major vessels and cranial nerves. We describe five patients with chondrosarcoma of the skull base who were managed at our institute between January 2002 and December
